Ο εορτασμός της Παγκόσμιας μέρας του «Λευκού Μπαστουνιού» έχει καθιερωθεί στις 15 Οκτωβρίου, μία σημαντική γιορτή για τη διάδοση της χρήσης του λευκού μπαστουνιού, την ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού στην προσπάθεια των ατόμων με οπτική αναπηρία για μια πιο ανεξάρτητη διαβίωση, καθώς και στην αντιμετώπιση των προβλημάτων που συναντούν οι συνάνθρωποί μας στην καθημερινή μετακίνησή τους.
Το κίνημα του λευκού μπαστουνιού ξεκίνησε μετά την λήξη του Α΄ Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου στην Αμερική από τον οφθαλμίατρο Richard Hoover ο οποίος για να βοηθήσει τους βετεράνους του πολέμου στην ένταξη και αποκατάστασή τους, πρωτοχρησιμοποίησε ένα μακρύ καλάμι. Με την πάροδο του χρόνου το μακρύ καλάμι εξελίχθηκε σε λευκό μπαστούνι το οποίο αποτελεί σήμερα παγκόσμιο σύμβολο.
